"Amp´s for sale!"
Every now and then I´ll get a mail, people offering to sell their Burns Amp´s. Natuarly one of the first questions that appere is, whats the value of my old amp?
This type of question´s is almost impossible to answer. The market for secondhand Guitar-amp´s make you soon realise the old Burns amp´s have not reached the status of collectors items as many other old amp´s.
Still the real collectors items among amp´s is those with tube amp´s.
A 60´s VOX amp seam to be worth a fortune, the same goes for other brands. But during the same time those producers also made exellent solid State amp´s that still can be bought for a small amount of money.
This make´s it hard to estimate the value of a Solid State Burns amp. There is hardly not a guitarplayer born the wouldnt sell his left leg in hope to buy a 60´s VOX AC30-50, while the same guitarplayer would´nt even look at the solid state VOX´s.
One of the members in My band tries hard to sell His minyt condition Fender FM100 top with 4 x 12 cabinet. Bought a few years ago at app 600,oo£ it seams impossible to sell the unit at 100,oo£. Anyway He bought an Orbit Three (unfortinutly with a load of faults).
It seam´s that old solid state amp´s only regarding prices can be compared with today´s High Tech amp´s! The question is, shall I buy a 40-50 year old Burns amp or a brand new High Tech VOX, Marshall, Behringer aso. Those amp´s comes with a load a gadget sounds included.
To few out of todays guitarplayers have realised that those old Solid State amp´s and as far as I know those Burns amp´s is not only value for Your money, they are GREAT varue for money.
A couple of Burns amp´s have been sold-bought here in Sweden during the last 2 years at prices from 60,oo£ to 350,oo£. There is also amp´s offered for sale at the same prices. Natuarly it´s also a matter of the amp´s condition. Is the amp going to be exported? In that case its also a matter of freightcost´s.
Bought a Orbit Two from UK at 60,oo£ - the postage was 110,oo£!!! When it arrived I was forced to repair it during 15 hours!
The market of Burns amp´s in march 2013 shows unfortinutly for those who want to sell that the prices on Burns amp´s is going down. Lucky for all of You who dream about an old Burns amp. At this moment there is 3 on sale at ebay with asking price of 135-399,oo£, all of em was still on sale a couple of weeks later and unsold.
An Orbit Six was sold at the asking price of 135,oo£!! A true Monster amp that also is extremly RARE!
The Orbit Three, with a starting bid of 399,oo£ seam extremly expensive even if the amp look great. Still the original speakers is missing.
The Orbit Two, at 250,oo£ with non original speakers and missing knobs do also seam to have a too high price.
There was also the Bert Weedon Orbit double 12. With its history it sold at 540,oo£.
Later on i will try to list all Amps sold during the last 2 years or so, to give you all a hint on the true value.
1 / Is it working properly. (including tremolo, reverb aso)?
/Be ware - cost of repair for those old amp´s is skye high, and it´may be a problem even finding someone who can do the job/
2 / is the speaker-s ok, and original?
/ the 12" speaker was made by FANE so there may be a possiblity to find proper if not original speakers, while the 10" speakers may be hard to find. Many Orbit three and Orbit Two amp´s that originaly used the 10" ELAC speaker´s have been modified with 12" speakers.
3 / whats the condtion of the cabinet?
As far as I seen most Burns amp´s show hardly no signs of beeing worn on the road, still the cbinets should look nice, hopefully with the grey lining still intact.
4 / does it have the original volume-tone-reverb knobs?
lots of amps have non original knobs, and those are extremly hard to find. Still if you do find em they will be expensive for sure.
5 / is it the original leather handle.
the handle seam to fall apart, but I think a good leather workshop can make a new one.
6 / the switch pedal (nice orange thing)?
the Orbit range used a orange wooden block for the switching of tremolo and reverb.
7 / the production number plate (missing)?
I do hope some of you come to an understanding about the value of Burns amp´s. If you do wanna sell your Orbit Two amp the price ranging at 10,oo£-150,oo£, while the Orbit Double 12 - Three amps at 40,oo£ - 300,oo£
Regarding the range of Bass and PA amp´s the value is much harder to tell, mainly because there is extremly few to be found. Last time i found one for sale it was a BB - 50 for sale in Russia at 40,oo£!!!!

During me search for BURNS guitars, amps & gadgets, I natuarly came across all those more or less good copies that has been made thrue the years. Aleard in the early 60-ies producers in Japan made copies of different Burns guitars, mainly the Bison model.
"law suit & clone´s"
Guitar production in Japan lead to the so called "law suit" models. Guitars made mainly in the US, like Gibson Les Paul and Fender Stratocaster was copied but also various other popular guitar designs. Some of those copies turn´d out to be as good as or in some cases even better then its original. The big companies the filed a complain regarding this copy indrustri but didnt win world wide.
As Jim Burns ideas was a kind of European forerunner in the field of electric guitars companies in Japan started to make copies of his guitars. Most of them was bad copies but some was really made near to the original design. Take a look at the Dillon Brian May guitar.

"Aston Guitar Company"
a rather new made copy from, this Marvin-Marquee copy some years ago.
the "Dillon Brian May" guitar.
"Aria Diamond 1968"
exept for the tremolo and pickups and headstock it shares the same body
and styling of the Burns Vibraslim-TR2
"Barclay"
"Burns-Eko Violin bass-1967/8"
Burns badged violinshaped guitar is possibly made by Italian EKO.
Burns badged violinshaped guitar is possibly made by Italian EKO.
After the Baldwin takeover, a new ES styled model came in production.
Bodies to the 700-serie guitars was made by EKO in Italy, actually it do looks like the same bodies as used on the EKO 290 guitars.
This violinbass with Burns badge might have been a one off in hope that Burns/Baldwin also would be interessted in this shape of guitar.
At least such a thought would give some kind of answer to Why this Eko bass do have a Burns logo on the headstock.
"Kawai Telestar 4-pickup"
here the producer have tried to copy the famous 4-pickup Bison.
"Kawai Telestar 3-pickup"
and when Burns stepped down to a 3 pickup design Kawai did the same.
"LaBoz XII"
the Burns badge on pickgueard and headstock seams original,
the rest of the guitar is rather copied from the Mosrite guitars.

"ÖRJAN double-6"
(Eagle Guitars Sweden) made this 12-string copy in early 60-ies.
Later he became the Burns importer in Sweden.

"dare-BURNS Vibraslim clone"
this guitar was who´s body styling is copied from the original Burns Vibraslim-TR2
was made in laminated wood. Shaped to archtop style with acustic chamers inside. In hope to
obtain some Burns sound, it was buildt with 5 singelcoil pickups!
The two rotary switches gives 18 different sounds. One volume covers bridge and 2nd pickup,
while a Master volume take care of it all.

"dare-BURNS Marvin/Jazz Bass clone"
desperate need for yet another bass made me build this one.
Once again the body was copied from an original Burns Marvin bass, its body in laminated wood, with top surface in mahogony. In tru Burns style not less the 4 pickups was installed, unfortinutly Fenderish! The project is still on and will hopefulle be finished soon. Still it has already profed to be a real good bass, with sound possibilities near the extreme.
